How To Make Your Own Simple Syrup

Simple Syrup Cover

Simple syrup is a common cocktail ingredient that you can purchase at a store but it is SOOO easy to make at home it seems kinda silly to buy it.

I use it in my mojito recipe, sangria and many more drinks. Over the next few weeks I am going to be sharing a few less simple-simple syrup recipes that you can use in drinks so I figured I should start with the basics.

You will need equal parts of:

granulated sugar
water

that is it, simple!

I usually use 1 cup of each because it fits nicely in my glass measuring cup.  You can do this two ways, stove top or microwave.

In the microwave, add the sugar and water to a microwave safe dish, I like to use a glass measuring cup because it makes it easy to pour into a bottle once it is cooled.

Simple Syrup water and sugar

Heat until hot but not boiling. The time will vary depending on how much sugar and water you use. With 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water and a standard household microwave I would start with 1 minute and 30 seconds. Stir about 15 seconds and see if the sugar is dissolved. If not, return it to the microwave and alternate heating 20-30 seconds followed by stirring until it is not cloudy and doesn’t feel gritty as you stir.

For the stove top the concept is the same. Add the sugar and water to a saucepan and heat over medium heat stirring every few minutes until it is no longer cloudy and the gritty sugar has dissolved.

Allow to cool then pour into a bottle and store in the refrigerator until needed.
