Dark and Stormy at the Friday Afternoon Happy Hour

Dark and Stormy cover

It was a Dark and Stormy night…. well not really but I always wanted to start a post like that. It is actually really sunny and bright out right now but I know this time of year the weather is much different for most of you so I thought I would share a new-to-me favorite cocktail!

I was introduced to the Dark and Stormy by my sister and brother in law when I was visiting them in DC last year. They are really creative and trendy with their cocktails and are usually the ones to turn me on to a drink that I would have otherwise not ordered off a menu. So Andy my brother in law, aka the house bartender, mixed up some drinks for my sister and I and it was all down hill from there…

The official recipe calls for Gosling’s Black Rum and Gosling’s Ginger beer (official recipe here) and the story behind the drink is a fun read if you have time. Those ingredients are hard to come by here in Puerto Rico, so after spending the better part of the year trying to find ginger beer here in PR, I settled for Reed’s Ginger Ale. Reed’s is much spicier than regular ginger ale but it does not have the same “bite” as ginger beer. In a pinch, it will do.

If you want to make it “authentic” according to the original recipe, please use Gosling’s, but here is what I use to make our own little version in Puerto Rico:

Dark and Stormy ingredients

2 oz Bacardi Select Dark Rum
4 oz Reed’s Ginger Ale
1 Lime slice

Fill your glass with ice. I am using a 12 oz “old fashion” glass in the pictures. Add 2 oz of dark rum.

Dark and Stormy rum

Top the glass off with ginger beer (approximately 4oz)

Dark and Stormy Ginger beer

Garnish with a slice of lime.

Note: Since the name “Dark ‘n Stormy” is a registered trade mark of Gosling’s I have chosen to call the drink Dark and Stormy. Yes, I know the real name of the drink and yes, I used the word “and” on purpose 😉

  1. I LOVE Dark and Stormys. I was introduced by Canadian friends years ago. I can’t find Gosslings very easily here in Arizona and if I can find it, it is way to expensive for my pocketbook. I did find it on a menu at a restaurant in Ventura, California and it was great! Real Gosslings and real Ginger Beer. Yum!

Ashley, I’m an Ohio girl living here in PR and haven’t been able to find ginger beer anywhere either. I know that La Factoria (in Old San Juan) makes their own in house, but they do not sell it. Can you tell me where you found the Reed’s Ginger Ale?

Justine, Funny the things that you can’t get down here and end up missing! I ended up finding the Reed’s at Econo. It was not with the soda where you would think. It was on the juice isle and it was right next to pineapple juice… kinda random location but I am glad i actually found it! Good luck on you quest for ginger ale!!

Great post! I am an old friend of Andy and Alli, and this is my favorite cocktail. Cheers!

  4. This looks very refreshing! Pinning now to try this summer.
